About the Business Course

This full time business course in Dublin will provide students with the relevant knowledge and skills to empower them to make a significant contribution within modern business, commercial or administrative environments. The business course is for school leavers who wish to pursue a career in business, enterprise or related fields and also mature students who wish to improve their career prospects. The learning process in this course involves lectures, tutorials, practicals, workshops, case studies and interactive learning. Lecturers actively encourage participation in classes. This course has particular emphasis on both finance and information technology.

Entry requirements

Access is facilitated through the standard CAO route. A minimum of five Leaving Certificate passes, including English and maths, is required. Mature students (aged 23 and above) should apply directly. Entry routes are also available through a range of expressed agreements with FETAC programmes, professional awarding bodies and through IBAT’s RPL policy.

International students should apply directly. Students who have qualifications from overseas will be subject to checks. IBAT College uses a number of comparision systems, such as NARIC and the NQAI Qualifications Recognition system, to compare and establish equivalency of international awards. An IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required for non-native English speakers.

Cliodna holds a Barrister-at-Law Degree from the Honorable Society of Kings Inns, a Bachelor of European Business and Legal Studies from University College Dublin and a Graduate Diploma in Information Technology from Dublin City University. Having previously worked in the business sector and now a practicing Barrister-at-Law Cliodna brings her extensive experience in both law and business to her teaching practice enabling her to deliver an in-depth and high quality Corporate and Business Law programme.

Mark Dean – IS/IT Lecturer
Mark is an IT professional with over 17 years industry experience. Over this period he has accumulated knowledge and skills from numerous sectors ranging from education through to manufacturing and banking. He has been involved in many IT roles including software developer, team leader, systems analyst, and corporate IT trainer. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science from Trinity College and has lectured on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as professional programmes such as IATI and ACCA.

James has been lecturing, specialising in business related subjects on Masters, Professional and Undergraduate academic programmes for a number of years. Dave has over thirty years’ experience in State, Semi State and Private Sectors the latter twenty in senior positions across HR, Marketing and IT. He has gained a wealth of lecturing experience with the University of Limerick, National College of Ireland and IBAT. Dave holds a professional diploma in management and MBA from the Open University Business School, has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 1993 and qualified as a project management professional (PMP) in 2009. As a facilitator of learning Dave is an advocate of problem based learning and committed to a student centred approach.

Barry Smith – Business & Finance Lecturer
Barry Smith, chartered accountant, has been teaching accounting and finance since 2001. He spent five years teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Dublin City University Business School. In 2006, he left Dublin City University to establish his own business developing online accounting and finance educational content. Barry continues to teach ACCA and ACA accounting courses on a freelance basis and has recently authored a financial accounting textbook for McGraw-Hill publishers. Prior to working at DCU, he spent five years working with PricewaterhouseCoopers in New Zealand, Germany and Zimbabwe. Barry holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from University College Dublin and is currently completing PhD research at the University of Birmingham, UK.

Paula has experience in the public sector having acted as a financial adviser in relation to EU funding. She is now using the practical experiences gained in industry to deliver accountancy modules on the Management Accounting module on IATI.

Dr. Martin Quinn – IATI Financial Accounting 1 and II Lecturer
A Charted Management Accountant since 1994, Martin has a BA(Hons) in Business Studies, an MSc in Management and Applications of IT in Accounting. He has worked in manufacturing firms in Ireland for 11 years (several roles in small indigenous manufacturing firms and 8 years in a global paper company) prior to starting an academic career. He completed his PhD in the School of Accounting & Finance at University of Dundee in 2010.
