About the Business Course

This degree programme builds upon the areas of Management, ICT, Finance, Accounting and Business which are introduced to students in year one and year two of this course. The course is for school leavers who wish to pursue a career in business, management, accounting or related fields and also mature students who wish to improve their career prospects. Students will build upon their introduction to business and management functions to develop a range of skills, including analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary in the modern business environment.

What are my Career Prospects with this Business Course?

The Bachelor of Business is designed to prepare individuals for employment in the private and public sectors and further education. Students may develop careers in the following areas: industrial relations, sales and marketing, manufacturing and operations, hospitality and travel, accounting and financial services & human resources.

Progression

This course has been designed in consultation with HETAC, the Higher Education & Training Awards Council, to provide a pathway to students to further professional qualifications such as progression to Honours Degrees (HETAC Level 8) or directly into employment. HETAC is the qualifications awarding body for third-level educational and training institutions outside the university sector in Ireland. This course is designed to offer students progression from the Level 6 Higher Certificate in Business.

Entry requirements

Access is facilitated through the standard CAO route. A minimum of five Leaving Certificate passes, including English and maths, is required. Mature students (aged 23 and above) should apply directly. Entry routes are also available through a range of expressed agreements with FETAC programmes, professional awarding bodies and through IBAT’s RPL policy.

International students should apply directly. Students who have qualifications from overseas will be subject to checks. IBAT College uses a number of comparision systems, such as NARIC and the NQAI Qualifications Recognition system, to compare and establish equivalency of international awards. An IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required for non-native English speakers.

Jackie Kennedy - Profile

Jackie is a lecturer in Business and Management studies and teaches a range of subjects such as HRM, Entrepreneurship, HRD, Management and Leadership. She holds an MA in Human Resource Management and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Learning & Teaching from the National College of Ireland. Jackie is a member of the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel Development and the American Society of Human Resource Management. Jackie has over 20 years experience of HRM, Reward & Performance Management in the Financial Services industry, at both senior management and consultant levels. Jackie has taught in a number of private and state educational institutions at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. She combines her extensive range of industry experience with her strong academic achievements to provide an insightful, enjoyable and valuable learning experience for students.

Ciaran Lawlor - Profile

Ciarán Lawlor is a practicing Barrister and experienced legal educator. Ciarán graduated from UCD with an Honours Degree in Law, and proceeded to study at the Honorable Society of the King's Inns . He completed his studies at the King's Inns and was called to the Irish Bar in 2005. He subsequently completed an LLM in European Law also at UCD, graduating with distinction. Prior to commencing practice at the Irish Bar, Ciarán interned with leading Irish law firm A&L Goodbody, with Amnesty International (Ireland), and was an IRCHSS funded project assistant on the EU Law PhD project at UCD. His practice focuses on civil law, with an emphasis on contract and commercial litigation, debt-collection, personal-injuries, and defamation. Ciarán has a broad experience of teaching law to undergraduate students, and has also lectured on the Graduate Diploma in Arbitration in UCD. At IBaT he has lectured contract law and public international law on the ICM Legal Studies Diploma , and currently teaches Corporate & Business Law 1 and 2.

Dave has over thirty years experience in State, Semi State and Private Sectors; the latter twenty in senior positions across HR, Marketing and IT. He has gained a wealth of lecturing experience with the University of Limerick, National College of Ireland and IBaT. Dave holds a professional diploma in management and MBA from the Open University Business School, has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 1993 and qualified as a project management professional (PMP) in 2009.
