This FETAC Level 5 course has been designed to provide the student with an appreciation and understanding of the concepts, issues and insights in business. This programme provides students with the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them to make a significant contribution within modern business, commercial or administrative environments.

This course aims to equip students to meet the needs of a growing economy for personnel with business administration and information technology skills. Students are introduced to the diverse aspects that comprise a business enterprise or other organisation. They will also gain an understanding of the concepts and processes of management.

What are my career prospects

Graduates may find employment in a variety of business positions where knowledge of either business or administration is either a requirement or a definite asset. The blend of business skills and work experience gained by students on this course makes them attractive candidates for a range of employment opportunities. Work experience is undertaken as part of this course.

Academic Progression

The FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies provides a pathway for students to further professional qualifications and higher education qualifications including a Higher Certificate in Business or Bachelor of Business. Graduates of this course who obtain five or more distinctions (including Communications) are also eligible to apply to the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI, Galway) for entry onto their Arts Degree Programme.

Continuous assessment applies all year round and represents roughly 60 per cent of the final grade. Assignments are to be completed during the year. There is an end of year assessment for some subjects that represents roughly 40 per cent of the final grade.

The FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies provides a pathway for students to further professional qualifications and higher education qualifications including,
a Higher Certificate in Business or Bachelor of Business

 

How accredits this course?

This course has been designed in consultation with FETAC, the Further Education and Training Awards Council, to provide a pathway for students to further professional qualifications such as the HETAC Higher Certificate in Business and Bachelor Degree courses.

  • Leaving Certificate.
  • Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent qualifications.
  • Mature Applicants (23 Years) with relevant life and work experience.

John was awarded an International Executive MBA by the Smurfit Business School (UCD). He holds numerous other educational qualifications, including Diplomas in Logistics Management awarded by the Dutch Federation of Industry (DEBAK) and TEFL

Rosemary combines a strong academic background with extensive experience in the business sector, including a number of year’s managerial experience. Rosemary holds a BA in Business and HRM from the NCI and a Masters Degree (MSc) in Education and Training Management from DCU. Rosemary is experienced in developing and delivering high quality programmes and brings a wealth of practical experience to her teaching practice. She lectures in Business, Business Management and People Management

Mark is an IT professional with over 17 years industry experience. Over this period he has accumulated knowledge and skills from numerous sectors ranging from education through to manufacturing and banking. He has been involved in many IT roles including software developer, team leader, systems analyst, and corporate IT trainer. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science from Trinity College and has lectured on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as professional programmes such as IATI and ACCA.

Lisa is an experienced lecturer who has been teaching for over 14 years. During this time, Lisa has taught in both the academic and corporate sectors. She has previously lectured Business and IT subjects at Griffith College and led the Training Teams in Esat BT and Software Paths. Lisa has also founded & managed 2 small businesses and brings extensive real life work experience to her teaching role. She has undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Business and IT from Northeastern University, Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University. She lectures in Systems Analysis & Design, Business Applications and Marketing.

Over this time she has amassed experience in strategic business development and deployment, sales operations, price negotiations, customer relationship management and marketing management. She holds a Bachelor in Business Studies and a Masters by Research in Business Studies. She lectures a variety of business subjects including International Marketing, Strategic Management, Project Management and Organisational Behaviour.

Adrienne Gallagher – Business & Finance Lecturer
Adrienne is a qualifiedaccountant with 15 years experience in the Financial Services sector both in Ireland and in a Pan European context. Having worked for companies such as Bank of Ireland, Standard Life and Royal Bank of Scotland, she gained extensive experience in finance, IT Management and HR. She lectures in Financial Accounting, Business Maths and Quantitative Methods

Paula Daly Hayes – Business & Finance Lecturer
Paula is a qualified accountant and a graduate of DCU where she was awarded a Bachelor of Business. She has worked at a senior level in different sectors, ranging from retail to manufacturing based in Ireland, the UK and Germany. Paula has experience in the public sector having acted as a financial adviser in relation to EU funding. She is now using the practical experiences gained in industry to deliver accountancy modules on the Management Accounting module on IATI.
