Take a Close look at the benefits of Social Media

Social media: putting you and your business at the heart of your community

As a business consultant, professional, and owner of an SME, Elisabeth Goodman, of RiverRhee Consulting, has found social media an invaluable component of her business tool-kit. In this article she describes how people can take a more strategic approach to it.

Communities of practice and social networks

Practitioners of knowledge management, sociologists, and many other business and academic professionals recognize the importance of ‘communities of practice’ or ‘communities of interest’ and social networks both within and across organisations for general human interaction, problem resolution, creativity and innovation, and personal or professional development.

Techniques such as ‘social network analysis’ have been designed to identify the existence of social networks and the people who act as the focal ‘hubs’ or ‘nodes’ within these: the people who, irrespective of hierarchy, others are drawn to as centres of expertise, intelligence, information or support.
Organisations, recognizing the importance of ‘communities of practice’ (those who are carrying out related work), and ‘communities of interest’ (those who have a common interest in a particular field), will seek to encourage and support such groups across the formal organisational structure.
Social media undeniably provide individuals and organisations with a further means of supporting such communities and networks both within and across organisations.  This blog describes how social media in general, and the use of LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and blogs can be used strategically to put you and your business at the heart of your community.

The importance of defining your goals and strategy for social media
Although people may have unspoken objectives for using social media, as with any endeavour, some up-front planning is likely to result in a more effective result, and a more efficient use of your time.  (Social media, like e-mail and general use of the internet, can be an enormous consumer of time!)
Objectives for using social media may include one or more of the following:
  1. A need to document and build up connections with those with whom one wishes to keep in touch e.g. when leaving a job, starting up a new business
  2. To create an on-line presence and monitor reputation e.g. to aid with job hunting, establish or maintain the credibility of a business
  3. To look for opportunities e.g. jobs or prospective clients
  4. As a resource for developing an area of expertise
How to enhance your social media skills
Trial and error, learning from your friends, reading online resources and books on the subject attending seminars and 1:1 coaching are the many options available to help you enhance your skills in social media.  Some specific resources are listed below.
In addition, the following will give you and your organisation a greater guarantee of success in placing you at the heart of your community:
  1. Having clear goals and strategies for your use of social media
  2. Thinking holistically about all the approaches you might use, of which social media would be a part
  3. Putting an emphasis on being helpful to your fellow community members
  4. Making your use of social media part of your daily, weekly or monthly routine

See what Keith Feighery an IBAT College lecturer had to say about the IBAT - Diploma in Online Marketing, Sales and Digital Strategy Course

The Online Marketing, Sales and Digital Strategy course brings together all the necessary skills to design, build, manage and measure effective online and digital campaigns weaving together the core skills of digital marketing, social media, online PR, website optimization, paid and organic search and measurement programmes. The aim of the course is to provide participants with a clearly defined set of practical digital skills which can be leveraged immediately at client-side marketing teams, digital and integrated agencies, and drive strategy and tactical solutions for enterprise eCommerce businesses, B2B and B2C businesses, communications and public relations organisations, owner managed businesses, and web marketing organisations.

Keith goes on to explain that each module will be taught using practical case studies in order to ground all theoretical learning in real-life industry examples. The tutor will deliver core demonstrations of relevant digital tools. Students will have the opportunity of implementing and testing concepts and applications in computer labs.

He explains that creating a digital strategy for your organisation takes a holistic view of all digital and social channels and platforms and aligns with strategic goals. He explanied how students will learn how to analyse key ways of driving traffic, creating awareness and generating and managing leads online, for businesses and services and analyse key social media channels and platforms and look at case studies of business that are using social media to develop their business. Keith talks about the importance of creating a programme for testing, measuring and optimising digital content to ensure the sales funnel is constantly performing and meeting targets and goals.

Keith was asked what type of students would enjoy a course like this. He said those who have a background in marketing, branding, advertising, sales and PR as well as those who are involved in developing a web presence and digital marketing programmes as part of their job would be most likely to be interested in this course. Students who are interested in social media and mobile technologies as well as coming from a web development background would also have the necessary interests in undertaking this course. The course also acts as an excellent conversion path from traditional non-digital roles to more online based career prospects.

Keith explained some of the career opportunites that would open up after successfully completing thsi course. Participants who complete the course will be able to pursue opportunities in managing online marketing and sales campaigns within client-side marketing organisations, manage large volume ecommerce sites, create and manage digital campaigns within an agency environment, and develop careers in online PR. They will have an expert understanding of how to develop and rollout digital and social media strategies within organisations of all sizes that are aligned with corporate objectives.

A good skill for digital marketers to pursue is to gain a greater technical understanding of how to produce web content. To this end they could undertake web design and development courses, flash production, or digital design modules.

Don't forget the CAO results are out on the 18th of August.

Another important piece of information to note is that the Round 1 Offers are expected to begin on the 23rd of August and the academic term in IBAT College Swords will begin in September.

A quick word from Niamh Kernan, IBAT College's  CAO Admissions Officer:
“Education is playing a pertinent role in today’s society and economy.  Individuals are recognising that education, particularly an education in business, is now vital to increasing employment opportunities in a wide range of different industries”.

Web Design Student’s success story in the making!

Web Design Student’s success story in the making!

Ivan Corless is a great example of what someone can achieve by studying Web Design with IBAT College. Ivan started his web design studies in January 2010 starting with the Diploma in Web Design and moving on then in March to the Diploma in Graphics & Animation for the Web. His goal is to carve out a career in web design and he sees the need to understand all areas of web design to reach this goal. With Ivan's energy and IBAT's high quality standards it is not a surprise that Ivan has already put his skills in to action. Take a look at what he has achieved so far:

Here is a link to a website that Ivan has created from start to finish. Click Here

We can only imagine how good the site will be when he has developed more advanced skills through his continuous studies into the advanced courses in web design.

Ivan is also working closely with a partner of the college on a special project at present. Keep tuned for more details next month!

Ivan talks here about his experience at IBAT College:

“What I liked about the web design and graphics for the web courses were that they did exactly what they said on the tin. They were well structured and didn’t wander yet still allowed some time to explore different ideas that were not on the agenda

Lectures

Both Morgan Campbell & Mark Dean knew their stuff and were able to communicate the information in a clear and concise manner. I was particularly impressed with Morgan’s course notes. They are brilliant. So good in fact that they’ve become a part of my design reference library alongside some pretty expensive books!

Knowledge

Given that six months ago I barely understood HTML and now I’m authoring in Flash I’d say I’ve done pretty well out of it.

IBAT College

I found the staff at IBAT College friendly and helpful and the timetable suited for me. I am looking forward to continuing my studies in Advanced Web Design with the college.”
