PENDING QQI VALIDATION

Recent findings show a large number of open job vacancies for digital marketing manager e.g. for February 2021, there were 455 vacancies for digital marketing manager on the website of recruitment agency Indeed.ie. Central to these is leading the development of marketing plans and managing their execution. The Certificate in Digital Marketing Management has considered these in its design and development. Alvomedia estimated that in 2020, there were 150,000 jobs in the digital marketing industry in Ireland alone, http://alvomedia.com/demand-for-digitalmarketing. Statista were equally optimistic, claiming that spending in the digital advertising market in Ireland is projected to reach US$993m in 2021. https://www.statista.com/outlook/dmo/digital-advertising/ireland. Both point to a positive direction for digital marketing in Ireland, with a corresponding positive outlook for the management of digital marketing.

The aim of the Certificate in Digital Marketing Management is to provide graduates with a set of skills and knowledge base that they can use to manage digital marketing activities across a variety of organisation types. There is a dearth of programmes tackling the management of digital marketing. This overlooked aspect is important in that digital marketing activities need to have an overarching management to guide and direct digital marketers in their work. The development is underpinned by required skills throughout the programme. Examples are analytical skills with digital content in evaluating information for digital marketing plans and producing plausible and coherent marketing campaigns. Learners will also address future trends in digital marketing helping prepare them for the workplace of the future.

This programme will provide learners with the knowledge, knowhow, skill and competence required for a career in digital marketing management.  There is emphasis on ensuring that they develop a range of current and practical digital skills required in the workplace of the future in the context of digital marketing management, complemented with appropriate leadership and management skill, and transversal skills ensuring the graduate is work ready and committed to continuing professional development.

A unique aspect is the inclusion of the Digital Marketing Institute’s (DMI) Certified Digital Marketing Professional Program (CDMP).

The primary objectives of this proposed programme are to:

  • Provide an industry informed Special Purpose Award, Certificate in Digital Marketing Management, attractive to those looking to reskill or upskill in digital marketing management in a supportive yet challenging academic environment.
  • Equip learners with specific knowledge and knowhow in the field of digital marketing management, such that they can exploit digital marketing technology to solve problems and achieve desired ends in a continuously evolving digital work environment.
  • Develop and enhance learners’ leadership and management skills.
  • Produce industry-ready graduates, complete with appropriate professional and personal attributes, ready to take up employment.
  • Instil in learners an ethos of continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Form active citizens with an understanding of their impact in the wider social context of digital marketing management.

The Certificate in Digital Marketing Management will allowing learners to develop skills and knowledge in digital marketing management. They will have an opportunity to acquire a grounding in the field of marketing and its related area of sales. They will be able to position marketing in the wider field of business, and develop and digital marketing materials for use in a real-life organisation.

Of particular importance are the personal / professional programme learning outcomes. Learners will have an opportunity to develop their own personal/professional development plans for reentry to the marketplace or moving within their current workplace. For those away from the workplace for some time, the programme provides an opportunity to re/upskill in a very popular area, acquiring the hard and soft skills that they might currently lack.

The emphasis on the management of digital marketing as opposed to the nuts-and-bolts of digital marketing. There are a number of programmes already existent that teach these skills. In the proposed Certificate in Digital Marketing Management the learner is exposed to the theories and concepts of digital marketing such that they acquire an in-depth understanding of them but stop short of computer lab sessions. For example, learners learn about Facebook advertising, how it works and what it can achieve but do not create Facebook adverts.  Instead, they are involved in the management process of Facebook advertising.  This is of particular interest to workers who used to have management roles and want to return to one in the field of digital marketing, or who want to move into the management side of digital marketing.

On successful completion of this (QQI) Certificate in Digital Marketing Management, NFQ Level 7 programme the learner will be able to:

  1. Display specialised digital marketing management skills, knowledge and techniques in modern business contexts.
  2. Recognise and adapt to changing trends and technology in marketing practice.
  3. Evaluate and communicate the key issues and challenges in digital marketing in the context of the current competitive and complex business environment.
  4. Manage digital marketing campaigns and activities, and people and situations within those campaigns.
  5. Display leadership abilities in working with others.
  6. Develop a personal development plan demonstrating self-awareness of own transversal skills and competencies aligned through research to current employment opportunities.
  7. Articulate their internalised view of digital marketing management, taking account of its wider implications for business, society and community.

These programme learning outcomes address a number of key skills as follows:

  • Digital Skills – Learners will develop high digital literacy skills from this programme, being able to determine and manage marketing requirements from digital sources, and using technology to communicate marketing plans and ideas. The ability to identify and interpret digital and social media marketing sources, learning from them, and applying these skills and knowledge to various marketing activities.
  • Transversal Skills – these appear throughout the programme. Evaluating the key issues and challenges in digital marketing requires students to develop critical thinking skills. The communication of these to a variety of audiences, e.g. classmates, lecturer, guest industry evaluators, etc., will further communication skills.  Learners will work with each other, and in some cases with industry representatives to achieve prescribed marketing ends, and thereby develop their inter-personal skills.
  • The programme has an emphasis on the management side of digital marketing, and management by its nature requires management of people as well as processes and situations. This facilitates development of leadership skills as they take charge of various aspects of various assessment projects and in-class activities in digital marketing management.
  • Future-proofing is emphasised in discussion and debate about evolving trends in digital marketing and the management of changing marketing technology and how it impacts digital technology.
