Why Front End Web Development

This part time evening course has been specifically designed for aspiring or existing web developers who wish to expand their knowledge of web development. The main objective is to upskill to the latest techiques in JavaScript, JavaScript frameworks, layout, tooling (git, node) and cloud deployments. The course assumes a basic level of knowledge of website development equivalent to the IBAT College Dublin Diploma in Web Design. It is not suitable for beginner web developer, students should be able to demonstrate a proficient knowledge of development.

During the course you will be taken from the initial development of a website product listing and booking platform that is using a CSS grid system. You will be shown how to integrate interactive elements to the platform, including how to add include tabs, accordions, content panels and the use of AJAX functions. The main objective of this course is to upskill your existing skills as a web developer to a more advanced level. It includes Client-Side JavaScript Programming for the web and a solid foundation in HTML and CSS code.

Another main objective of the course is to enable existing website developers to develop sites responsive to the latest devices & capable of being deployed as mobile applications on iOS and Android devices using technologies such as HTML 5 and PhoneGap.

  • Based on the reports of the Government ‘Expert Group on Future Skill Needs’ Web Development is identified under 'shortage of skills' in 2020
  • As of 2017, there were severe shortages of suitable candidates for Senior Java Developer roles (28%), Front End Developers (27%), Software Architects (24%) and .NET Developers (24%)

Course Content

On completion of the Front End Development Course graduates will be able to:

  • Javascript Basics (Part 1) - variables, arrays, loops
  • CSS Review
  • Javascript Basics (Part 2) - html 5, local storage, functions
  • Bootstrap CSS
  • Jquery   (Part 1) - Working with Ajax and JSON
  • Jquery (Part 2) - Working with git
  • In class project (Part 1) – Working with json, ajax, and bootstrap
  • Working with Heroku
  • Angular (Part 1) - Javascript Development tools (node, grunt, SASS)
  • Angular (Part 2) - Working with Firebase
  • Angular (Part 3)
There are regular in-class review exercises over the term, with the last class being used as a wrap-up and review, looking at future technology trends and how you can further develop in the field.


  • On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded an IBAT College Dublin Diploma in Front End Web Development (full attendance required).
  • Dynamic asssessment is conducted weekly based on exercises relevant to each topic. 

What is a Professional Diploma?

An IBAT Professional Diploma is a focused, short duration practical course that consolidates, upskills and/or reskills learners in a professional area. They are stand-alone qualifications  that do not lead to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Career Opportunities

Students holding an IBAT Diploma in Front End Web Development will be able to apply for more senior positions as web developers. The course will allow existing web developers to expand their knowledge of website developemnt and enable them to create more advanced web developments and work on more advanced web projects. The course is an excellent introduction to programming for the Web and successful completion will open up many new opportunities within the area.

Academic Progression Opportunities

Students who graduate with an IBAT College Diploma Front End Development and are interested in furthering their study in the area of web development are eligible to progress onto the more advanced Diploma in Mobile App Development.

John Rowley
John Rowley/ Lecturer Front End Web Development /
John Rowley's career spans web development (LAMP), Web Manager and Corporate spokesman (Ryanair), 11 years in software management and development (Symantec, Corel), technical training (PHP, MySQL, Perl, XML, C#, CSS Javascript), technical writing (C++, Java), documentation management and news journalism. He was the first PHP developer in Ireland to achieve Zend PHP Certification and the first technical writer in Ireland to document C++ compiler and application frameworks. He has worked as a consultant / developer for Irish Rail, Suzuki, Nestle, and Eli Lilly. He currently works as a .NET information architect for the ECDL foundation where he develops the centre and candidate administration systems for the ECDL programs in Ireland. On a lighter note, he's also an accomplished stand-up comedian, performing regularly in Manchester and Dublin

Applicants must have basic web experience in HTML, CSS or have completed the Web Design Diploma at IBAT or equivalent.
