According to the Business Post, worldwide demand for psychology professionals is expanding at a rate of 22% per year.

Ireland is scheduled to accept 297 clinical, counselling, and education psychology trainees in 2021/22, 300 in 2022/23, and 296-297 trainees in 2023/24, according to the Psychology Project Team: Establishment of a National Psychology Placement Office.

Course Details

This Diploma in Psychology emphasises psychology as the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, specifically how the mind works and how it influences behaviour.  Psychology is a multifaceted discipline and the Diploma includes many component fields of study such as cognitive psychology, developmental (child to adult) psychology, social psychology. Engaging with the Diploma will help you to better understand yourself and better appreciate differences with others.  We all apply psychology in our everyday lives, and it helps to know why we and others might behave in certain ways and exhibit certain patterns to that behaviour.

 On successful completion of this Diploma you will be able to:

  • Describe the key concepts and theoretical perspectives of the main areas within the field of psychology.
  • Evaluate the internal processes associated with cognitive psychology, neurobiology and the brain 
  • Demonstrate insight into how psychology evolves over the lifetime of a person with particular attention paid to childhood and critical developmental years
  • Outline how our social world influences our thoughts, emotions and perception
  • Outline treatment options including but not limited to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)  
  • Demonstrate awareness of psychiatric diagnosis, with a focus on schizophrenia diagnosis, prognosis and treatment outcomes.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of an assignment that you complete in your own time and submit at the end of term.  There is no formal exam in this Diploma.

Lecturer in Psychology

Kevin Lynch is a research scientist who holds a Higher Diploma in Psychology and a Master’s in Applied Psychology. Kevin began his career with a BSc in Marketing, forging a keen interest in human behaviour. His research to date has focused on using technology to facilitate psychological interventions and create lasting behaviour change.

At Trinity College Dublin, Kevin is a research coordinator / lab manager. His current works is with an MQ-funded global research project developing an algorithmic tool that helps clinicians to make more personalised treatment decision for mental health patients – using web-based data collection, cognitive tests, computational modelling and machine learning.

What is a Professional Diploma?

An IBAT Professional Diploma is a focused, short duration practical course that consolidates, upskills and/or reskills learners in a professional area. They are stand-alone qualifications  that do not lead to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Entry Requirements

Previous study of psychology is not needed.  Applicants should have a strong interest in psychology, and human thinking and behaviour.
