This course aims to develop participants’ knowledge and understanding of key aspects relevant to the fitness and exercise environment. It will also introduce students to exercise techniques as well as resistance and conditioning training prescription.

A key element of this course will be the opportunity to acquire the practical skills and qualities desired within the Sports and Leisure industry. On completion students should be able to demonstrate the ability to show and understanding of training programmes, understand exercise physiology as well as demonstrate the skills required to plan and instruct exercises in a fitness environment. Successful completion of this course will allow candidates to assess clients and will aid in gaining entry to the sports and leisure industry.

  • Anatomy and Physiology (Cardiovascular System & Respiratory System)

How long is the course?

The Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management runs for 11 weeks (part-time), one evening per week from 6.30-9.30pm  


To be awarded the Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management participants will be required to successfully complete a presentation (50%) and a practical demonstration (50%).

What are my Career Prospects with the Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management

This course will cover exercise techniques and prescriptions, allowing participants to seek employment within the sports and leisure industry or to focus on starting up a fitness and exercise business of their own. Students will obtain practical knowledge and professionalism in demonstrating exercise techniques to a client. They will be able to advise and create a programme to match a client’s needs, adapt, progress and regress a client’s exercise prescription accordingly. They will also gain confidence to manage clients and groups in the sports and leisure industry.

  • James Claffey- Sports Management and Development Lecturer

    James has eight years lecturing experience chiefly in Sport and Exercise Psychology. He holds an Honours degree in Recreation, Sport & Exercise and has also completed a Masters in Sport and Exercise Psychology. He is registered with BASES (the British Association of Sport Exercise Sciences) as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist. As well as lecturing, James works one to one with individual athletes and teams in the Sport and Exercise Psychology arena. He has over 12 years experience in Sports Coaching and the educational training area. James also also developed the Sport Psychology module for Quality & Qualifications Ireland, which is delivered by a number of third level institutions nationwide. James has a wide and diverse range of industry experience which includes working with awarding bodies such as NCEF, IFP, ITEC, BTEC , FETAC, HETAC, QQI, and ISTD.
