Why Event Management

The events industry is a young and exciting industry that has expanded rapidly in the last decade, giving rise to an ever increasing demand for professional event managers.

The industry now includes events of all sizes from the Olympics down to business breakfast meetings. Many industries, charitable organisations, and interest groups hold events in order to market themselves, build business relationships, raise money, coordinate events abroad or celebrate achievement. This course will give you a broad understanding of event management, from concept to delivery.

This Diploma aims to provide you with a broad understanding of event management, specifically the event proposal, event planning from concept through to event delivery and post event evaluation.

You will be given the required theory, know-how and practical examples to support you gaining employment in the event management industry. You will be taught by lecturers that have a mix of academic and industry background, which give you a practical, career-focused experience.

The course will equip you with the necessary tools to develop an event from proposal, through planning, to completion stage. This will include preparing an event proposal, stakeholder management, sponsorship and other vital essentials required to host an event. You will practice and look at best practice examples through case studies, and an opportunity to visit or volunteer at a real-world event management experience.

Recent classes have utilised their event management skills to support events such as the National Sustainability summit, at exhibitions in Croke Park, Aviva and RDS, work at sports marketing events through the Lecturer’s networks, and organise events such as the IBAT College Open Evening.

Assessment

  • To be awarded this Diploma you will be required to successfully complete coursework (40%) and a final presentation at the end of the course (60%).

Career Opportunities

On completion of this programme you will have a strong understanding of the event management industry, and the skills required to support running an event. This will help you to seek employment as a co-ordinator in the event management industry, working in collaboration with a team or independently, or enhance your skill-set within your current employment.

You should be equipped to contribute to the organisation of a range of events, from catering and charity events, to sports and political events.

Emma Olohan
Emma Olohan/ Lecturer Event Management /
Emma is the founder of United Events Global, an event and marketing project management company. Emma is contracted to manage local and global event and marketing projects. In 2017,Emma was elected to the global fed board of PWN Global, a non-for-profit organisation for accelerating gender balance leadership initiatives in the workplace. Emma has been a key contributor in communicating, creating, devising and delivering innovative campaigns and event support across Europe. Her client base includes a plethora of global companies. Emma has mentored and supported new business owners and SMEs in their start-up phases and co-launched the Women in Aviation chapter in Ireland. Emma holds a Master's degree, among a number of other education qualifications. A member of the Dublin Chamber and PR Institute of Ireland, a keen education advocate, mother to her little boy, and a Linkedin enthusiast, you can find Emma at local PWN Dublin events, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce network, or contributing to a sustainable development project in the Algarve.

Gerry Dawson
Gerry has extensive event management experience in both planning and event delivery, working across the British Isles and EMEA territories. Currently he is Director/Co-Founder of London based Sport Legends Events Limited, a B2B experiential events business, as well as Partner with Destination Marketing BSL, an event development and sports tourism consultancy. Since 1997 he has mostly been immersed in the international events sector, with hands-on experience on major events including Olympic, professional and amateur sport formats. Other major sports event management experience include: • Cycling (road, track and MTB) • Distance running (Marathon, HM and 10k) • Triathlon and duathlon • Adventure sports - sailing, surfing, windsurfing and snowboarding. His agency experience also includes event activation in soccer, rugby and inline skating - historic motor racing and Le Mans 24, international corporate team building, multi-sport lifestyle festivals and jazz, food & drink events.
