The Project Management Institute (PMI®) defines a project as a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. Project management is, therefore, the application of knowledge, skills, processes, methods and experience to achieve the project’s outcomes.

To be a successful Project Manager you need to have a results-orientated management style that relies on building collaborative relationships. A key factor that distinguishes project management from just 'management' is that it requires a final deliverable within a finite time-span (and budget), unlike management which is an ongoing process. Because of this a project professional needs a wide range of skills; often technical ability, and most certainly people management skills and good business awareness and insight.

According to the PMI® High-performing organisations successfully complete 89% of their projects, while low performers complete only 36%.

Over 50,000 are currently employed in project management across Ireland, in sectors such as IT, public sector, financial services, construction, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. According to a 2017 survey of project management leaders by the Ireland Chapter of Project Management Institute (PMI):

  • 60% of those surveyed said there are not enough experienced Irish project and programme managers to fulfil the country’s project management needs.
  • almost 70% of respondents expect Brexit to increase the complexity of their projects.
  • Two in three anticipate a rise of the level of resources needed to complete projects in the next 12 months.

Addressing the outcome of this survey, the President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, Mr Niall Murphy, has expressed concern about the current skills deficiency:

“Project management will be instrumental in navigating this uncharted territory that is Brexit, from managing a company’s future trading relationships with the British market, to working with major financial institutions who are expected to relocate here. Without a sufficient supply of skilled project managers nationwide, there is a concern projects will not be effectively delivered. This shortage needs to be tackled, as it will ultimately affect the Irish economy as a whole".

This outlook reinforces the continuing and future opportunities which exist for Project Managers.

Testimonials

The course offers lots of practical advise on not just managing a project but a team, the structure was very good. Frances mixed it up with theory and practical exercises done in class. She knows PM well and I especially enjoyed her own stories/experiences of projects she'd worked on. I'd recommend this course to anyone wanting to get a better understanding of Project management and looking to apply the skills they learn.
