Course Overview

This Diploma is designed to provide front-line managers, supervisors and team leaders with leadership training that supports a practical understanding of the role and function of management in the business environment.
You should consider undertaking this course if you have been appointed to a team leader or supervisory position or if you are considering taking on or applying for a management position that requires supervision of staff. It is also suitable for managers who have no formal education qualification and wish to develop their theoretical knowledge.

Through participation on the course, you will gain valuable leadership training involving an insight into the knowledge, skill sets and attributes that successful managers require at all levels in organisations. It will provide you with techniques that enable you to play a full role in the supervision of staff on any project or enterprise.

This training course is designed to improve your management skills to appeal to both current and potential employers.

Course Content

The course is structured to improve the confidence of individuals who have no formal training in management by providing a comprehensive toolkit that covers the key aspects of management and forms a solid foundation for your career as a team leader, supervisor or front line manager.


  • Management: the process of management, levels of management in an organisation, management skills, various schools of thought on management practice (classical and contemporary), strategic management and competitive strategies.
  • The internal organisation: what constitutes the internal environment of an organisation, functional controllability, people and organisational culture, management styles, mission and vision statements, SWOT analyses, strategic planning and management, leaders and leadership.
  • The external environment: social economic and political forces, competitor analysis, customer and marketplace analysis, micro and macro elements, carrying out PESTEL analysis, Porter’s frameworks.
  • Organisational Structure & Culture: managing the roles power and responsibilities within a business, data and people flows, implementing and managing processes, building a capable organisation, building core competencies and competitive capabilities,
  • Organisational Control: measuring progress towards performance, setting performance goals and standards, financial and non-financial controls, project management controls, change management theories, change agents, resistance to change.
  • Supervision and Leadership: the unique position of supervisors, leaders and influence, workforce development, characteristics of good leadership, social and emotional intelligence, leadership styles.
  • Communications: the process of communications, the media of communications, senders and receivers, encoding and decoding, noise, verbal and non-verbal communications, the context of the communications, barriers to communication.
  • Human Resource Management: objectives of HRM, industrial relations, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance coaching, performance appraisals.
  • Teams & Groups: characteristics of teams, project teams, stages of team development and evolution, team roles, motivating and evaluating teams.

You will be required to complete two pieces of course work (each worth 50%).

What is a Professional Diploma?

An IBAT Professional Diploma is a focused, short duration practical course that consolidates, upskills and/or reskills learners in a professional area. They are stand-alone qualifications  that do not lead to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
